Part 1: Grammar — Introduction to Nouns

1. Definition of a Noun

A noun is a naming word. It is a word used to name a person, animal, place, thing, or an abstract idea. Everything around us has a name, and those names are nouns.

2. Identification of Nouns

To identify a noun in a sentence, look for the words that answer the questions “Who?” or “What?”.

  • Example: The teacher walked into the classroom.

    • Who walked in? The teacher (Noun).

    • What did they walk into? The classroom (Noun).

3. Types of Nouns: Common and Proper Nouns

For this week, we are focusing on the two foundational classes of nouns:

A. Proper Nouns

A proper noun is the specific, unique name given to a particular person, place, day, month, or institution.

⚠️ Grammar Rule: Proper nouns must always start with a capital letter, no matter where they appear in a sentence.

  • Examples:

    • People: Andikan, Professor Francis, Ekomobong.

    • Places/Institutions: Uyo, Nigeria, Primrose Online School.

    • Days/Months: Monday, January, May.

B. Common Nouns

A common noun is a general name given to people, places, things, or animals of the same kind. They do not refer to a specific individual entity.

⚠️ Grammar Rule: Common nouns are only capitalized if they start a sentence.

  • Examples:

    • People: teacher, boy, principal, doctor.

    • Places: school, city, state, country.

    • Things: desk, whiteboard, book, uniform.

Part 2: Vocabulary Development — The School & Classroom Environment

To communicate effectively in school, you must master words associated with your immediate environment.

1. People in the School Environment

  • Principal / Headteacher: The administrative head of the school.

  • Proprietor / Proprietress: The owner of the school.

  • Form Teacher: The teacher assigned to manage a specific class grade.

  • Prefect: A student leader appointed to maintain order (e.g., Head Boy, Head Girl).

  • Bursar: The official in charge of school fees and financial accounts.

2. Places within the School Premises

  • Laboratory: A room equipped for scientific experiments.

  • Library: A quiet room filled with books for reading and research.

  • Assembly Hall: A large room where students gather for morning prayers, announcements, or events.

  • Sickbay: A small clinic or room used for treatment when a student falls ill.

3. Classroom Objects

  • Whiteboard / Chalkboard: The surface at the front of the class used for writing notes.

  • Marker / Chalk: Writing materials used by the teacher on the board.

  • Locker / Desk: Pieces of furniture where students store materials and sit to write.

  • Register: An official book used by the form teacher to record daily attendance.

Part 3: Reading & Writing — Comprehension

Reading Passage: “The First Bell at Primrose”

The morning sun cast a bright amber glow over the newly painted walls of Primrose Online School campus. For Emeka, a fresh JSS 1 student, walking through the main gates felt like stepping into an entirely new world. His uniform was crisp, his socks were pulled up tight, and his backpack felt heavy with brand-new textbooks.

As the assembly bell rang at exactly 7:45 AM, students trooped out of their classrooms and lined up neatly in the courtyard. The Principal, Mr. Bassey, stood at the podium. His voice boomed through the microphone as he welcomed both old and returning students to the first term. He emphasized the values of discipline, hard work, and academic honesty.

After the assembly, Emeka’s form teacher, Mrs. Pius, led the class into the JSS 1 classroom. The room smelled of fresh paint and wood. Standing beside the large white glossy board, Mrs. Pius picked up a blue marker and wrote: “Welcome to a New Horizon.” Emeka took his seat at a pristine wooden desk, opened his exercise book, and smiled. He knew that secondary school would be a challenging journey, but he was completely ready to learn.
